An excellent story with technical explanations is "Thrice Upon a Time", by James P. Hogan, in which the world gets saved from disaster by time travel.
Changing history through traveling back in time would appear to violate energy conservation, as well as the thermodynamic requirement that entropy generally increase. For these reasons, it seems clear that physics would protect the universe from paradox by changing a person's position by the amount of travel into the past. This would protect even from paradoxes cause by signalling. For example, traveling back one minute would get us way beyond Earth's orbit, precisely one light-minute away. Then any signal we send cannot reach our origin point before we sent it. But, of course, all such rules are unnecessary in fiction, resulting in a variety of strange results, such as those in David Gerrold's "The Man Who Folded Himself" (1973).

perhaps there could be a part two of this? id kind of like to see the method of time travel in doctor who illustrated as i dont quite understand how at some points time seems self consistent but at other points ‘time can be rewritten’.
In Harry Potter they had a free will, coz they did what they wanted. So what do u mean when u said they didnt have free will?

How is time traveling to the past to save your own life not counted as creating a new timeline?
Stay with me here, what if you never actually go back in the timeline but “time traveling” was always a part of the timeline giving the illusion that you traveled to the past part of the line when in fact your position in the line never changed.
Doesn't the Harry Potter's consistent version of time travel preclude free will from both the "original" self as well as the time travelling self? The "original" self has no free will because what they will do has already been done by the time travelling self. But more subtly, the time travelling self also has no free will because they are now experiencing, similarly, a past that already occurred but simply from a different lens. They cannot do anything that can change the past (which is essentially, _anything_), or as Harry Potter notes: he has to save their "past" selves, because they themselves were saved by their "future" selves. They have no free will. Now I wonder, does this logically means that no one in such a world can ever have free will as there is always a possibility of a time traveller in any given time "locking" in the series of events, or does this lead to the idea of "periods" in time in which there exists a time traveller, and thus free will does not exist during that period? These periods themselves must then have been predefined by the universe itself, and not as a result of free will, as the action of traveling back in time to any given point, in itself must have lived within a period in which there is no such thing as free will by the above reasoning.

it's a shame you didn't talk about steins;gate's version of time travel, using Kerr Black holes. it's one of my favorite means of time travel in fiction. along with D-mail as a concept

Great video, and really good drawings! I also like the Harry Potter time travel mechanism because it was nice and logical. However, the physicist in me has trouble accepting any time traveling mechanism that doesn't involve going back in time inherently changing the future. Your visit to the past would presumably increase the total energy in the universe, the entropy of the universe would presumably go down, and you would absorb (and produce) radiation meant for other places… all of that points to a change in initial conditions at that point in time, and thus a different future. BUT… my analysis above also presumes that the Conservation of Energy isn't accounted for in the time traveling process itself, which it might be! Anyway, fun video!
Bill and Ted falls into the last category of time travel movies.
